SUSTAINABILITY

FOR THE SOCIETY

Borusan Group’s first industrial enterprise, Borusan Pipe also laid the foundations of the Group’s social responsibility-oriented culture. With this approach, shaped under the lead of Borusan Group Founder and Honorary President late Asım Kocabıyık, Borusan Pipe supports institutions and projects in the fields of education, culture, arts, and social gender equality today.

Support for Education

Since early 1960s, Borusan Pipe has been engaged in efforts to improve education and educational institutions. During this period, Borusan Pipe supported several schools and universities, and continues to provide unlimited support to education under Borusan Kocabıyık Foundation.

Support for Arts and Culture

Borusan Pipe is proud to be a supporter of Borusan İstanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, Borusan Quartet, Borusan Music House, and Borusan Contemporary, which continue to nurture art in our country as Borusan Sanat.

Support for the Social Gender Equality Efforts

Borusan Pipe undertakes various collaborations and implements projects in order to be a part of the solution in one of the most fundamental social problems today, social gender equality with the initiative of Bu İş'te Bir Eşitlik Var.

My Mom’s Job Is My Future

Supporting efforts aimed at empowering women under this umbrella, Borusan Pipe takes part in the “My Mom’s Job Is My Future” project, launched to increase women’s employment in the industry and provide the children of working mothers with quality education. In collaboration with the Ministry of Family and Social Policies and the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, the company helps open nurseries and day care centers –called “Borusan Factory of Joy”— for children ages 0-6 in 10 organized industrial zones in 10 provinces.

“My Mom’s Job Is My Future” lays the foundations for strengthening women, families and the national economy by introducing more women to professional life in the industry. Borusan Factories of Joy, which will be built in the Organized Industrial Zones for the education and care of children ages 0-6, aim to;

• Enable women who are unable to work due to child care,
• Remove the obstacles against women’s participation in the workforce,
• Increase women’s employment in industry,
• Provide an educational environment that will help with the mental and physical development of children who cannot benefit from pre-school care and education services.

Come on Girls, Let’s Code

Borusan Pipe also plays a role in the implementation of the project “Come on Girls Let’s Code”, which was launched at the Gemlik production hub to raise awareness of social gender equality and to help girls take part in social life with strong support.

As a part of the project, an 8-week-long training is delivered to girls ages 7-14 of factory employees. For the trainings, collaboration is being made with the KızCode platform, which has long been providing coding training to immigrant girls and women in the United Kingdom to help them become an active part of life.

The program aims to prepare girls to the future by introducing them to information technologies. At the trainings, students receive seminal lectures on many topics ranging from the basic principles of electronics to game, animation or story programming with Scratch and 3D modeling.

Field Work —Not Table Jobs

In our country, a great majority of female engineering graduates refrain from applying to engineering positions in factories and manufacturing fearing that either they would not be selected or they had a lower chance against male candidates. They try their luck in project design positions, which are referred to as desk jobs. At Borusan Pipe , we have launched a communication campaign to overcome this prejudice, to show that female engineers could also practice their profession in a male-dominated area such as production in heavy industry as well as project departments, to encourage them to this end, and to boost women’s employment at our facilities. The campaign, which is announced as a part of the university meetings held in certain times of the year and on social media and recruitment websites in other periods, receive greater interest than expected, and interviews with candidates show that this campaign is a particular reason why they preferred Borusan Pipe.

Nursery Support

Borusan Pipe supports field workers in gender equality, providing Nursery Support with a view to encouraging the participation of their spouses in professional life. As a part of this practice, a Nursery Support of TRY289 is paid per month to manufacturing employees with a child in the nursery age (36 months - 72 months) and a working spouse. The project, which is available to employees in the Gemlik and Halkalı Facilities, was also included by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank as a best practice in the most recent international report, which features the best practices aimed at empowering women in global world of business.

Equal Together

With a view to boosting women’s employment particularly in the fields of manufacturing and heavy industry, Borusan Pipe launched the “Equal Together” project in 2018. Under the project, 22 woman field workers employed in the Gemlik and Bursa Facilities started to work on the same production lines and with the same job descriptions as male employees following their on-the-job trainings. Today, while many projects supporting women’s employment keep this support limited to the job definitions in the lateral fields of production, this project created equality in the true sense of the word for male and female workers in a field of heavy industry such as steel pipes. Furthermore, for the first time, a woman employee was appointed as Production Group Leader under the project.
